All the cricket-playing countries in Asia are eagerly waiting for this second-biggest cricket festival to witness. With the interference, the Asia Cricket Council has already announced their fixtures, venues for the matches, timing, and dates for the upcoming tournament.

The Asia Cup cricket tournament 2023:

The Asian Cricket Council announced that the Asia Cup 2023 will commence in Multan, Pakistan.  In the inauguration match, Pakistan will be taking on the neighboring country Nepal on August 30. The highly-anticipated Pakistan vs India first-round game will commence on 2nd September in Kandy, Sri Lanka. If both teams qualify for the Super 4s, Colombo’s R Premadasa Stadium will host the contest between them. Furthermore, Colombo will host the final on 17th September, with an arrangement of a reserve day.

Sri Lanka and Pakistan will co-host all the Asia Cup 2023 matches. The original draft designed by the Pakistan Cricket Board has gone through several iterations, as the six-country cricket tournament will see a hybrid mode. The hybrid mode has already been approved by the ACC. As per the main draft, Lahore would get a chance to host 4 matches. Later, the Pak cricket board added Multan as the secondary optional venue after the new PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf took the lead this July.

The tournament will follow a fifty-over format. There will be two different groups with each side having three teams. India, Pakistan, and Nepal are placed in Group A, while Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka are the members of Group B. Pakistan will host four games across two home venues, and Sri Lanka will host the rest of the matches.

The ACC announced the format and the groups on 9th January 2023. A total of 13 matches will be played in the group stage. Then the top two nations from each group will qualify for the Super 4.

Controversies Regarding Asia Cup 2023:

Since the start, India has been stating that due to several intra-governmental issues, the Indian cricketers cannot travel to Pakistan for the tournament. So, considering this, the venue should be changed. Pakistan was not a bit satisfied with that and the PCB chairman and counsel stated that serially they are the deserving hosts of Asia Cup 2023 and they would not change their stands. Thus, India and Pakistan got into a cold war even a few months ago.

Pakistan proposed the idea of hybrid mode to the ACC chairholders so that they can at least host a few of the Asia Cup matches. Both India and Pakistan have been in the political debate over the Pak-proposed hybrid mode. India had clarified their mentality over the traveling issue to Pakistan while proposing the hybrid mode that will see Pakistan get all their matches on home ground, except the matches against India.

Finally, the ACC came up with a settlement policy that Pakistan will host a few matches on their home grounds, and the rest of the matches including India’s, will host Sri Lanka. So, the tournament will see a proper hybrid mode for the goodwill of all the participants.

Here was all the basic information regarding the Asia Cup 2023. However, we can say that, it is going to be a warmup tournament for the Asia Cup participants as the ODI World Cup 2023 is also arriving shortly.
