The FIR (First Information Report) alleges the names of Shakib and 150 others, including high-profile political figures.
On 22nd August 2024, during the agitated student protest, Former Bangladeshi captain Shakib Al Hasan was accused of murdering Mohammed Rubel, a garment worker. Rafiqul Islam, father of the victim, had filed a complaint in the Adabor police station under Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
Born on 24th March 1987, Shakib Al Hasan is one of the most prominent and well-known cricketers emerging from Bangladesh. His contributions to the national team as an all-rounder are noteworthy and he showcased his skills in dual talent as both a left-handed batsman and a slow left-arm orthodox bowler.
In the early stages, Shakib used to play for local teams representing his hometown Magura. And, in the later years, he marked a place for himself as a consistent performer with his aggressive batting style and strategic bowling. As a result, this talent made Shakib a key player in various international formats, including Tests and ODIs (One Day Internationals).
Later Shakib Al Hasan ventured into politics to serve as M.P (Member of Parliament) for his hometown Magura-1 constituency, representing the ruling political party “Awami League”.
Shakib received mixed opinions and reactions when he initially ventured into politics, but he smartly maintained the balance between sports and a political career.
No, Shakib Al Hasan did not murder Mohammed Rubel, but his name has been involved in this issue. During the violent student protest and massacre ordered by the government, a garment worker named Mohammed Rubel died and unfortunately, Shakib has been named for murdering him.
Rafiqul Islam (father of victim Mohammed Rubel), had filed a case against Shakib Al Hasan during the political unrest in Bangladesh.
According to the reports, it is said that Mohammed Rubel was shot during the agitated protests by students in Dhaka. However, he was admitted to the hospital but Rubel could not resist the pain and died 2 days later in the hospital.
Shakib Al Hasan was not in Bangladesh during the violent protest carried out by students and he was playing “Global T20 Canada league”. And, Shakib has no involvement in this incident directly. According to the reason given by the victim’s father, Shakib Al Hasan is the Member of Parliament for the ruling party that has instructed the “Shoot Order”. Causing a mass murder during the protest, garment worker Mohammed Rubel was also shot in the massacre.
The FIR (First Information Report) alleges the names of Shakib and 150 others, including high-profile political figures. And, being a Member of Parliament from the Awami League Party, Shakib’s absence during this matter further worsens the allegations against him.
However, there is no other evidence to prove that Shakib Al Hasan murdered Mohammed Rubel, especially when he was not in Bangladesh during the time of the incident. The matter is still being resolved gradually, and other legal proceedings will soon give clarity on the accusations against Shakib.
Shakib Al Hasan faced many lashings and criticism for being silent during the mass protests in Bangladesh. It wouldn’t have caused this effect, if he was just a celebrity or cricketer and even people wouldn’t have expected any response from Shakib. But being a Member of Parliament, representing the Magura constituency, and belonging to the ruling party “Awami League” has caused severe criticism.
Being a Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina ousted the country in a challenging situation, leaving the nation in chaos. And, a “Shoot order” was instructed, which led to the massacre of hundreds of protestors. While the nation has been facing such issues, the silence from Members of Parliament of the ruling party caused frustration amongst the public.
Especially during July 2024, the student protest issue erupted, and its violence led to the ousting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the Awami League government.
Although Shakib was not in Bangladesh and was playing in the Global T20 Canada league, fans and the public expected that he would at least speak for once about this issue. People were waiting for Shakib to voice out his opinion against the political unrest and share a sense of solidarity with the students and citizens affected by the violence. But failing to do so and remaining silent had worsened the situation so much that Shakib is now scared to step into his home country, Bangladesh.
Shakib Al Hasan asked for an apology as he wanted to clarify his stance on the political turmoil in Bangladesh and shared his wish to return to his nation for a farewell Test match. But still, the people of Bangladesh have not forgiven him, and it seemed a threat for him to travel to his nation, so he announced that he wouldn’t be able to return to Bangladesh.
