India’s Debut into Cricket World in 1932:

On 25th June 1932, India made its official test match debut at Lord’s Cricket Ground and became the 6th international team to gain test status. The team led by CK Nayudu exhibited a solid performance with Mohammad Nissar’s impressive bowling figures of 5-93 in the match. Despite the brilliant bowling efforts, India lost the match by 158 runs due to the ineffective batting performance. However, it was just the beginning of India’s adventure into the cricketing world.

For the first 50 years, the Indian cricket team struggled to gain a reputation as a competitive team, by winning only 35 out of 196 test matches. In the 1970s, the Indian cricket team started to gain momentum with the rise of legendary cricketers such as Sunil Gavaskar, Gundappa Viswanath, Kapil Dev, and several other players.

Excellent Moments of 1980s and 90s:

India won the first World Cup in 1983 under Kapil Dev’s captaincy and the national cricket team witnessed the arrival of star cricketers such as Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Sourav Ganguly, and Anil Kumble in the 80s and 90s.

Under Ganguly’s captaincy, India became one of the dominating teams in international cricket by winning multiple series but concluded as the runner-up of the 2003 World Cup.

MS Dhoni’s Era: 2007 to 2017

In 2007, MS Dhoni took over the captaincy from Rahul Dravid and led India to victory in the inaugural edition of the ICC T20 World Cup. Soon he established himself as one of the successful Indian captains by winning the ICC World Cup in 2011 and the Champions Trophy in 2013. Interestingly, Dhoni is the only captain in cricket history to win all the ICC trophies.

The Evolution Of Cricket Format: From Test Matches To T20

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s Era: 2014 to Present

The era of “Ro-Ko” (Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli) witnessed these two duo batters as consistent cricketers from 2014 to the present (till 2024). Virat Kohli became the test captain in 2014 and the Indian cricket team ranked at the leading position in the ICC Test Rankings in 2016.  He later became the limited-overs captain in 2017. However, Team India under Kohli’s captaincy was the semi-finalist of the 2019 World Cup and runner-up in the World Test Championship 2021.

Later, Rohit Sharma took over the captaincy from Virat Kohli in 2021. Although his leadership was dominant, Team India lost the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-finals against England and concluded as the runner-up in the 2023 ODI World Cup, despite winning all the matches of that tournament.

But, Rohit Sharma didn’t give up and worked hard as a captain and player. Finally, on 29th June 2024, Team India successfully ended their 11-year-ICC-trophy drought period by winning the T20 World Cup 2024 under Rohit’s captaincy. Additionally, India emerged as the T20 World Champions as the unbeaten side of the recently concluded tournament.
