Which teams are the favourites to win the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024?

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 is just a month away. The top teams are set to compete against each other to lift the trophy. A tight schedule after the 50-overs World Cup in 2023, resulted in only a few teams being favourable to pick up their first-choice XI available for the upcoming grand event.

Comparing the performances of the teams ranked in the categories such as the frontrunners, chase packers, beyond the races and the backmarkers helps to determine their chances of winning the forthcoming T20 World Cup.

The Frontrunners in T20 World Cup 2024

These are the four leading teams that have the maximum chances to win the T20 World Cup 2024:

1. England:

The defending champions England will once again aim to be the main competitor to retain their title. Mainly, the presence of power hitters like Will Jacks and Jonny Bairstow have been impressive with their performance by smashing centuries in a thrilling run chase. Whereas, Jonny Bairstow and Phil Salt have scored 300+ runs in the tournament so far.

With the inclusion of several all-rounders in the squad, there will be a greater depth in the batting and bowling lineup. Additionally, Adil Rashid, who is ranked as the top T20I bowler in the world holds a great record in white ball cricket with an average of 5.94.

2. South Africa:

During the ODI World Cup in 2023, South Africa showed their powerful batting lineup. A few power hitters like  Quinton de Kock, Heinrich Klaasen, Aiden Markram, David Miller and Tristan Stubbs form the core part of the batting unit. Also, the presence of Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje and Lungi Ngidi adds fire to the bowling lineup. However, the limited spin options with Tabraiz Shamsi and Keshav Maharaj are expected to handle a majority of responsibilities.

On the other side, South Africa has never won any World Cup trophy so far which could be a huge challenge for them to break this jinx.

3. India:

The Indian cricket team with a strong batting and bowling lineup are considered to be one of the most formidable teams in the T20 World Cup. Especially, the spin-all rounders like Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel’s performance will prove to be effective in the USA and West Indies. Also, Suryakumar Yadav, with his 360-degree hitting abilities and the unorthodox pace bowling style of Jasprit Bumrah can be the trump cards for India in the upcoming tournament.

Team India is expected to win the T20 World Cup trophy for the second time under the brilliant captaincy of Rohit Sharma.

4. Australia:

Many Australian players have been performing exceptionally in the ongoing season of the IPL 2024, and their chances of winning the T20 World Cup have been further strengthened.

Especially, Travis Head formed a destructive opening partnership for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in a majority of matches. Additionally, a powerful bowling line-up makes Australia one of the favourite teams to lift the World Cup trophy for the 2nd time.

The Chase Packers in T20 World Cup 2024

These are the three teams that will be hunting down to win the T20 World Cup 2024:

1. West Indies:

After failing to qualify for the 50-overs World Cup in 2023, the West Indies cricket team have been improving themselves on a higher scale over the past six months. The Caribbean side will be aiming to lift the T20 World Cup trophy for a third time on their home soil. Also, they were triumphant against England in the 5-match T20I series held in December 2023. Mainly, the power hitters like Nicholas Pooran and Andre Russell can bolster their batting line-up.

2. New Zealand:

Kane Williamson as the New Zealand team skipper is ready to lead his squad to clinch another ICC trophy for his team under his captaincy. Although Trent Boult and Tim Southee are back in the squad, the injury of Kyle Jamieson and Adam Milne will be a huge blow for the Blackcaps.

Moreover, the huge expectations of Rachin Ravindra led the selectors to exclude Tom Latham and Tim Seifert from the squad. Despite having experienced players, the current squad seems to be slightly disorganized; which makes it difficult to compete with the most formidable opponents.

3. Pakistan:

Pakistan have been inconsistent in their performance during the ODI World Cup. Their recent 5-match T20I series against the B-tier New Zealand team concluded with a draw. Although Babar Azam is back as the captain, the retirement of Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim adds uncertainty to their winning chances.

Beyond the Races to perform well in T20 World Cup 2024

These two teams are out of the race to win the T20 World Cup 2024:

1. Afghanistan

Following their decent campaign in the 50-over World Cup; the Afghanistan cricket team’s progress will be enhanced by aiming for another solid performance in the upcoming T20 World Cup, under the captaincy of Rashid Khan.

The top-order batters like Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran along with other formidable spinners will provide a fierce battle against the competitive teams. At the same time, their chances of qualifying for Super Eights seem to be tricky since the stronger teams like West Indies and New Zealand are placed in the same group.

2. Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka finds itself in an open group with competitors like South Africa, Bangladesh, and the Netherlands. As a result, a pair of unfortunate defeats can jeopardise their chances of qualifying for the Super Eights.

The Backmarkers’ chances to win the T20 World Cup 0224

Bangladesh along with the other 10 teams can be beaten easily by the leading teams to win the T20 World Cup 2024:

1. Bangladesh

Although the Bangladeshi all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan hasn’t played any T20I since July 2023. He is expected to return for the grand tournament. However, their recent T20I series loss of 2-1 against Sri Lanka lowers their chances of winning the grand tournament. Ahead of the World Cup, the Bangladesh cricket team needs to perform well in the 5-match T20I series against Zimbabwe and the 3-match T20I series against the USA.

2. Other Teams

Teams like the Netherlands, Ireland, Namibia, Nepal, Oman, Papua New Guinea, Scotland, Uganda, Canada, and the United States have fewer chances of qualifying for the Super Eight of the T20 World Cup 2024. This is because these teams have to win matches against the challenging teams in their groups; which seems to be completely impossible with the present squads.
